Over the border and into the Wars of the Roses

It's been a long time since I've done a blog, due mainly to a house move, but I wanted to let you know about my next book, Alliance with her Renegade Knight, which will be out in summer 2025. 

There have been some changes between this book and the last one. Firstly, I've stepped into a different historical period and location, and am setting this book and the next one, over the border in Shropshire during the Wars of the Roses.  I've always been interested in this period of English history and, living in Wales, I know Shropshire very well.  

 For Alliance with her Renegade Knight, I've chosen the lovely medieval town of Ludlow as the location, and the time period is the winter of 1459/60, which was a pivotal time in this dynastic conflict.  

In October 1459, the Duke of York faced up to the royal army at Ludford Bridge just outside Ludlow, but for various reasons - mainly the reluctance of the Yorkists to actually take up arms against the King and a number of the Duke's soldiers defecting to the side of Lancaster - meant there was a rout rather than a battle. The Duke of York and his eldest son Edmund of Rutland fled to Ireland, while the Earl of Warwick and Edward of March, the Duke's second son, fled to France. They would be back in force in the summer of 1460 and things would take a very different turn in this early stage of the Wars of the Roses, but you'll have to wait for the second in the series for that story!

. . . or the calm before Storm Hannah hits!  It's been a while since I've posted, due mainly to the upheaval of a house move and getting settled into my new place.  It took a while!  Interestingly, setting up my study began the process, even though most of my stuff was still in boxes - some of it still is! - and I was sleeping on my futon in my living room while waiting for my bedroom curtains to arrive. Needless to say, not much writing was getting done; in fact, I took the momentous decision last week to take the rest of the year 'off.'  I put 'off' in inverted commas because I'm still awaiting feedback on my partial submission to Harlequin Mills and Boon back in January, and I aim to submit my timeslip to the RNA's New Writers' Scheme and, of course, go to the annual conference in July. RNA Conference 2016

The annual Romantic Novelists' Conference is one of the highlights of my calendar, and this year was no exception. Held at Lancaster University, the venue was lovely even if the weather wasn't exactly sultry and summer-like.  Getting together with good friends over a bottle or three of Prosecco was the absolute high spot of a wonderful couple of days. The sessions were interesting and inspiring, among them HQ Harper Collins 'Reaching the Top in Commercial Fiction,' Vasiliki Scurfield on 'Writing the Foreign Hero' and Kate Walker on 'Emotional Punch.' One of the most illuminating sessions, from my point of view at least, was Sonia Duggan's workshop on 'Rekindling your Romance with Writing.'  Having been writing for almost ten years and as yet unpublished, this one really struck a chord with me.  Sonia gave us an exercise on composing a Dear John letter to our writing and what I wrote both surprised and shocked me and, for the first time, I was...

RNA Conference 2018

As a writer, the annual conference is definitely the highlight of the year for me and, surprisingly, it seems to come around quickly each time. This year was no exception and, from counting down the months, then the weeks, then the days, suddenly I was packing and wondering which shoes would go with which dress! Welcome with Nicola Cornick and Jan Jones This year, the conference was in Leeds Trinity University, a campus just outside Headingly. Leeds is a lovely city but I didn't see anything of it beyond the train station. Horsforth, where the campus is located, was really nice though, and I enjoyed a short and pleasant walk from the train station to the campus with HMB author Rachael Thomas . The conference sessions were useful and enjoyable and included a double presentation from Mills and Boon.
